Weekly Racing News Bolger, Walsh and McManus combine on Champagne Platinum

Racing News from Limerick and Clare

Finalist Enda Bolger won the three-mile novices’ chase at Navan on Saturday, riding Champagne Platinum, which was ridden by Mark Walsh. The 14/1 shot, who is owned by JP McManus, battled strongly on the final turn to beat the Henry de Bromhead-trained 5/4 favourite Ain’t That A Shame and Rachael Blackmore by a neck.

Bolger made the following observation:

“He’s a talented horse; it’s just that he got a little lost along the way.” We’re most likely going to head to Punchestown for the cross-country pursuit, and we’ll decide from there which direction to go from there. He was really cautious with his jumping, but one thing about him is that he has a lot of stamina, and he was able to keep going until the end. It was getting near, and I wasn’t sure if we were going to make it or not. On paper, it appeared to be a reasonable beginners’ chase, and I was pleased with his performance. It gets up and running, and it’s a pleasant surprise to receive it at the beginning of the year.”
The following afternoon, Charles Byrnes and Jack Foley won the nearly two-mile handicap hurdle with 9/2 shot Light Brigade at Thurles, Ireland, with Light Brigade. A length and a half separated the six-year-old, who was owned by the trainer’s sister Patricia, and the Mary Ellen Doyle-trained Francois. According to the Byrnes, “I’d think that the better ground certainly played a role.” Jack gave him a second chance today because we were probably riding him a little too close to the vest. He came in with only one run and provided him with a great ride – he won’t be claiming 5lbs for a long time after that.”
