Serena Williams says best part of award ceremony was support shown for Ukraine

With her sister Venus and a film about their family nominated for a Critics Choice Award, the tennis star described the experience as “surreal.”

Critics Choice Awards (CCA) support for Ukraine is what Serena Williams found the most rewarding about this year’s event.

Will Smith, who portrayed their father in Kind Richard, earned the best actor prize for his performance at the 27th annual ceremony.

She described the experience of attending the awards with Venus as “surreal” and being nominated for best picture for a film about their family.

The next day, Williams posted videos and photos of her night out on Instagram.

Overall, she found the event to be a wonderful one, but what she found most enjoyable about it was that so many individuals talked about how they were helping those in Ukraine during the night.

Williams said she hoped those caught up in the conflict could “come through it” as millions continue to flee their homes in the region.

She also disclosed that she had assistance from her daughter Olympia and brought her nephew as a date to the CCAs, where she accepted a best drama series award (Chris Pizzello/AP).

She walked the red carpet in a pearl grey Versace gown with a long, dramatic train.

As seen in a video that she posted on Instagram, her daughter was seen helping her gather and carry the train.

Serena and Venus presented the CCA award for best drama series to HBO’s Succession, which won.

“It seemed weird to present with @venuswilliams at the Critics Choice Awards, on the same night a film about my family was nominated for best picture,” she posted on Instagram.

In a word, “THANK YOU” for a fantastic evening.
