Nate Diaz to fight Tony Ferguson at UFC 279 as Khamzat Chimaev bout is cancelled

Chimaev missed weight by 7.5 lbs., and Ferguson will be Diaz's new opponent.

Khamzat Chimaev missed weight for his scheduled fight with Nate Diaz.

Diaz, 37, was scheduled to fight No. 3 welterweight contender Chimaev in the final fight of his UFC contract. However, Chimaev missed weight by 7.5 lbs. Diaz weighed 171 pounds, so the UFC was left without the main event.

Both Ferguson, 38, and Li Jingliang, 171, weighed in for the co-main event. The UFC pulled Ferguson from his fight with Jingliang to pit him against Diaz in a five-round main event. Chima will face Kevin Holland, who was supposed to fight Daniel Rodriguez.

Holland weighed 179.5 pounds, one pound more than Chimaev, as his bout with Rodriguez was at 180 pounds. Chima kicked Holland backstage at Thursday’s event press conference, sparking a 100-person brawl.

Chima missed weight for the first time in the UFC and did not use the extra hour to cut. Chima smiled on the scale and flipped off reporters after hearing his weight. ‘Borz’ left the scale and said “that’s not bad” despite missing 170 lbs.

Jingliang and Rodriguez will fight, despite Rodriguez’s being nine pounds heavier. Jingliang beat Muslim Salikhov by knockout after losing to Chimaev by submission in October. Rodriguez had won three straight before facing ‘The Leech’.
