Liz Truss warns EU she is willing to trigger Article 16

UK FOREIGN SECRETARY Liz Truss has warned that if the negotiations she is now overseeing fail, she is willing to unilaterally overturn portions of the post-Brexit accord on Northern Ireland.

Truss stated that she will make “positive ideas” to her EU counterpart, Maros Sefcovic, during their first face-to-face meeting this week.

She did, however, state that she is “ready” to invoke Article 16 of the Northern Ireland protocol, which suspends portions of the treaty designed to prevent a hard border in Ireland if a deal cannot be reached.

After David Frost resigned as Brexit minister last month, Truss was given responsibility for the negotiations.

She is hosting Sefcovic, a vice-president of the European Commission, at the Chevening rural retreat provided to the UK Foreign Secretary when he comes on Thursday.
