Covid-19: 14,555 new cases, 940 in hospital and 89 in ICU

HEALTH OFFICIALS REPORTED 14,555 new Covid-19 cases in Ireland TODAY.

At 8 a.m. today, 940 persons were infected with the virus, 89 in intensive care.

Covid-19 was recorded in 17,065 people yesterday, with 1,011 in hospital and 92 in ICU.

The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) reported 83 deaths in the preceding week, bringing Ireland’s total to 6,035.

The latest statistics came after NPHET warned that the country’s PCR testing infrastructure was overburdened by the disease’s genuine caseload.

To relieve the strain on the system, changes were published two weeks ago to the recommendations for who should have a PCR test. Younger people should get frequent antigen testing and only get a PCR test if they get a positive antigen result first.
The daily case numbers provided each evening understate the level of Covid-19 in Ireland compared to earlier stages in the epidemic when the daily figures were substantially lower.
