‘BEAUTIFUL PERSON’ Tributes paid to Cork mum Gillian Daly, 44, who died after car entered River Lee as funeral details released
A tragic mum-of-two dies after her car crashes into a river on Friday night.
Gillian Daly, 44, died when her car entered the River Lee in Cork at 8.45 pm.
The 10 and 12-year-olds escaped the sinking car and were saved by bystanders.
The brothers were treated for shock and then released to a family member.
Gillian’s funeral mass is on Tuesday in Cork.
Her RIP.ie obituary reads: “Daly (Douglas, Kinsale, Millstreet) on June 3rd, 2022 unexpectedly.
“Gillian, wife of John O’Connell, mother of Evan and Luke, daughter of John Joe and Helen.
“Deeply missed by her heartbroken husband, children, parents, sister Caroline, brothers Jason and John, in-laws Martin and Eileen, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, uncles, aunt, nephews, nieces, neighbors, relatives, and friends, especially Nuala.
“Lying in repose Monday evening at Martin and Eileen’s home in Ardcarrig Estate, Bandon Road, Kinsale (eircode P17V327).
“Requiem Mass on Tuesday at 11 am in St. Patrick’s Church, Millstreet; funeral to St. Eltin’s Cemetery, Kinsale (approx. 2 pm)”
Many have paid tribute to “beautiful” Gillian and consoled her family and friends.
“Deepest condolences to Gillian’s family,” said one. John and the boys are in my thoughts.
“Gillian’s smile could brighten any room. She’s missed. God bless Gillian.
“The kindest, most beautiful person. Family and friends, my condolences.

Investigators are gathering CCTV footage from the docks to piece together what happened.
They’re also collecting CCTV footage from around the city to track the car’s movements.
Dedicated garda interviewers hope to speak with the boys this weekend if they can discuss the tragedy.
The gardai, Cork Fire Brigade, paramedics, Coast Guard, Naval Service, Cork River Rescue, and Mallow Search and Rescue responded after the alarm was raised.
Sikorsky Rescue 117 helicopter used its search cameras to coordinate the operation.
Saturday morning at 12.30 am, divers recovered Gillan’s body. The postmortem was scheduled for Cork University Hospital.
A crane lifted the car from the river for inspection.
Following the tragedy, local representatives condoled with the woman’s family.
Mary Rose Desmond of Fianna Fail said it’s shocking and tragic. The town is stunned. Tragic. Especially her family and friends.”
She also praised the search and rescue team that recovered the woman’s body from the water, saying, “Great credit is due to all the emergency services.” Search and rescue brought the woman home to her family.
It’s a sad time for them. No words can describe their tragedy.”
Lorna Bogue, an independent councilor, agreed: “It’s tragic.” Tragic and heartbreaking.”
TD Donnchadh O Laoghaire said, “The community is devastated.” Everything is shaken up. It’s tragic.”
Garda is investigating the tragic accident.
